PDF tools for lawyers and legal teams

Legal work puts unusual demands on a PDF: redaction has to actually remove text rather than cover it, two versions of an agreement have to be reconciled clause by clause, discovery arrives as thousands of scanned pages, and a file leaving the firm needs to be locked down. These workflows map our tools onto those obligations.

The problems this page solves

  • A black rectangle over privileged text can be copied straight out of the file.
  • Counterparty returns a contract with no track changes and says "minor amendments".
  • A discovery bundle is 900 pages of scans that can't be searched.
  • Signature pages have to be collected before a same-day filing.
  • Client files leave the firm without encryption or permission controls.

Workflows, step by step

Redact privileged material properly

A witness statement must be shared with personal details and privileged passages removed.

  1. 1
    🖤 Redact PDF

Redaction removes the underlying text objects, not just draws over them — the distinction that separates real redaction from a disclosure incident.

  2. 2
    🔎 OCR PDF

If the source is a scan, OCR first so redaction can target text and so the released copy remains searchable.

  3. 3
    🗜️ Compress PDF

Flatten and compress the released version so no residual layers travel with the file.

Reconcile two versions of an agreement

The counterparty returns an unmarked Word-to-PDF export of a 60-page agreement.

  1. 1
🔍 Smart Compare & Redline PDF

Smart Compare detects every insertion, deletion and modification, explains the practical impact of each, and exports a redlined PDF.

  2. 2
    ⚖️ Contract Risk Scanner

Run the risk scanner over the returned version for one-sided indemnities, missing termination rights and unusual liability caps.

  3. 3
    AI Summarizer

Produce a short change note for the client or the file.

Make a discovery bundle usable

Hundreds of scanned pages arrive with no index and no text layer.

  1. 1
    🔎 OCR PDF

Give the whole bundle a searchable text layer before anyone starts reading.

  2. 2
    ✂️ Split PDF

Break the bundle into per-document files so each item can be referenced and circulated separately.

  3. 3
    🔢 Add Page Numbers

Apply continuous pagination so references in correspondence stay stable.

Execute and secure a document

A settlement agreement needs signing today and sending securely.

  1. 1
    ✍️ Sign PDF

Fill fields and apply signatures in the browser, so the unsigned draft never leaves the device.

  2. 2
    🔒 Protect PDF

Apply AES encryption with an open password and separate permission controls before it leaves the firm.

  3. 3
    📚 PDF to PDF/A

Convert the executed copy to PDF/A for the archive so it renders identically years from now.

The legal professionals toolkit

Every tool referenced above, in one place.

Three things worth knowing

Strip metadata as well as content

Author names, editing time and revision history travel inside the file. Check document properties on anything leaving the firm — a redacted body with an intact metadata trail is still a disclosure.

Redact on the final layout

Redact after pagination and Bates-style numbering are fixed. Redacting first and then re-paginating risks reintroducing content from an earlier copy.

Treat AI output as first-pass triage

The contract scanner and comparison tools surface issues quickly and consistently, but they are a reviewer's aid, not legal advice. Every flag needs a qualified person to confirm it.

Frequently asked

Is redaction in PDFalot irreversible?

Yes — redaction removes the underlying text and image objects from the exported file rather than drawing an opaque shape over them. Always verify by searching the exported copy for a redacted term.

Where are contracts processed?

Redaction, signing, encryption, merging and splitting run in your browser. The AI tools — contract scanning and comparison — send extracted text to our AI infrastructure. Each tool page states which applies.

Can the contract scanner replace a review?

No. It flags risky clauses, missing terms and unusual allocations in plain language to speed up triage. A qualified lawyer must review the document and the flags.

Does PDFalot support PDF/A for archiving?

Yes. PDF to PDF/A converts to the ISO archival standard, embedding fonts and colour profiles so the document renders the same in future.
