The dangerous change in a returned contract is never the one they mention in the covering email. It is the indemnity cap that quietly moved, the notice period that shortened by fourteen days, or the auto-renewal clause that appeared in the definitions. Reading two versions side by side to find them is slow and unreliable, because the human eye is very good at seeing what it expects.

Smart Compare & Redline PDF aligns the two documents, identifies every insertion, deletion and modification, and then does the thing a plain diff cannot: it explains what each change means. The AI classifies changes by severity, flags the ones that shift risk, money or obligation, and tells you what to do about them.

The output is a redlined PDF in the format lawyers actually use — additions highlighted and underlined, deletions struck through, each change referenced to its page — preceded by an AI summary cover page and followed by a full redline appendix.

How to use Smart Compare & Redline PDF

  1. 1Upload the original document and the revised version.
  2. 2Run the comparison — text is extracted from both and aligned paragraph by paragraph.
  3. 3Review the change list, grouped by severity, with an explanation of each change's impact.
  4. 4Read the AI summary of overall risks and recommended actions.
  5. 5Export the redlined PDF to circulate to your counterparty or counsel.

Beyond a text diff

A character diff tells you that 'thirty (30) days' became 'ninety (90) days'. It does not tell you that this trebles your cure period exposure. The AI reads each change in the context of the clause it sits in and reports the commercial or legal consequence, which is the part that actually informs a decision.

What the redlined export contains

A cover page with the AI summary, identified risks and recommended actions; the document body with insertions highlighted and underlined and deletions struck through; and an appendix listing every change with its page reference for anyone who wants the full record.

Reviewing, not replacing, professional judgement

The tool finds and explains changes far faster than manual review, and it does not get tired on page sixty. It is a first-pass review instrument. Anything it flags as material should still be read by the person who is accountable for signing.

Supported formats, limits and things to know

  • Both documents need a text layer — run OCR PDF on scans first.
  • Comparison is of text content; changes to images, logos and layout are not detected.
  • Heavily restructured documents produce longer change lists as whole sections are seen as deleted and re-inserted.
  • AI analysis runs on Premium servers.

Smart Compare & Redline PDF — frequently asked questions

How do I compare two versions of a contract?

Upload the original and the revision. Every insertion, deletion and modification is identified, explained by severity, and exported as a redlined PDF.

What makes this different from a normal diff?

A diff shows what characters changed. This explains what each change means commercially or legally, and flags the ones that shift risk.

Can I compare scanned documents?

Run OCR PDF on them first so both files have a text layer, then compare.

What does the exported redline look like?

Standard legal redlining: additions highlighted and underlined, deletions struck through, plus an AI summary cover page and a full change appendix with page references.

Can I rely on it instead of a lawyer?

No. It is a fast, thorough first-pass review. Material changes it flags should be reviewed by whoever is accountable for the document.
