Password-protected PDFs are useful right up until they are in your way. A statement your bank encrypts with your ID number has to be re-entered every time you open it. A policy document you need to merge into a bundle refuses to be combined. A restricted file will not let you print your own copy.

Two kinds of protection
A user password stops the document opening at all and must be supplied. An owner password leaves the file readable but blocks printing, copying or editing; those permission flags can be cleared without knowing it. Both produce an ordinary PDF once removed.

This tool is for your own documents and files you have a right to use. Removing protection from someone else's copyrighted or confidential material may breach the law and their terms of use. You are responsible for how you use it.
Unlock before other operations

Can you recover a password I have forgotten?
No. If the document requires a password to open, you must supply it. There is no cracking or recovery.
What if I can open the file but cannot print or copy?
That is an owner-password permission restriction, and it can be cleared without knowing the password.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
For your own documents, yes. Removing protection from material you have no right to use may be unlawful and is your responsibility.
Will unlocking change the content?
