PDFalot vs iLovePDF
iLovePDF is the better known utility belt with a mature desktop and mobile app. PDFalot covers the same core utilities in the browser and adds document AI — chat, summarising, contract review and data extraction — that iLovePDF does not offer.
Last verified: August 2026

iLovePDF is, for a lot of people, the default answer to "how do I merge two PDFs". It has been around since 2010, it has a desktop app and mobile apps, and its tool set is broad and dependable. Any comparison that pretends otherwise is marketing, not information.
PDFalot started from a different premise: most of the classic utilities are now solved problems that a modern browser can do locally, and the interesting work has moved to understanding what is inside the document. So the classic tools run client-side in WebAssembly where possible, and the paid tier buys AI that reads the document — chat, summarising, clause-level contract review, and table extraction into Excel.
Everything below reflects both products as we tested them in August 2026. Vendors change tiers and limits often, so check the other side's current pricing page before you decide on price alone.

Where iLovePDF is better
- Native desktop and mobile apps. If you process PDFs offline or in bulk from a folder on your machine, a desktop app beats any browser tool.
- Brand familiarity and a very long track record — useful when you need to justify a tool to a cautious employer.
- Batch processing of very large file sets is more comfortable in a desktop client than in a browser tab.
- A larger ecosystem of integrations and a public API with established documentation.
Where PDFalot is better
- Document AI as a first-class product, not a bolt-on: chat, summarise, translate, contract scan, data extraction and an AI analyst.
- Most classic tools run entirely in your browser, so ordinary merges and splits involve no upload at all.
- Editorial depth: every tool page explains the mechanics, the limits and when not to use it, plus a glossary and audience guides.
- Simpler pricing — one Premium tier at $4 a month, or $40 a year, with no per-task signature or OCR counters.

Privacy: where your file actually goes
This is the clearest structural difference. iLovePDF is a server-side service: you upload, they process, they delete after a retention window. That is a perfectly normal model and it is what makes their desktop-grade performance possible in a browser. PDFalot runs merge, split, compress, rotate, crop, watermark, page numbers, image conversion and basic OCR inside your browser with WebAssembly, so for those tasks nothing is transmitted. AI tools are the exception — they necessarily send extracted text to our AI processing region for the duration of the request, and nothing is retained afterwards.
Tool coverage, honestly
For the twenty or so classic utilities most people actually use, the two products are close to equivalent in outcome. Where they diverge is at the edges: iLovePDF has stronger bulk and desktop workflows; PDFalot has tools that read the document rather than reshape it, plus a form builder, an invoice generator and a template library. If your work is "take these files and rearrange them", either will do. If it is "tell me what is in these files", only one of them answers.
Speed
On a typical laptop over an average connection, a 15 MB merge is faster in the browser than a round trip to a server, simply because there is no upload. On a 300 MB scanned archive the position reverses — a server with real CPU wins, and a browser tab may run out of memory. Our own size guidance per tool is published on each tool page rather than hidden in a support article.

Frequently asked questions
Is PDFalot a fork or clone of iLovePDF?
No. PDFalot is an independent product built by PDFALOT Proprietary Limited in South Africa. The tool names are descriptive of the tasks — merge, split, compress — because those are the industry terms, but no code or content is shared.
Can I use PDFalot without creating an account?
Yes. Free tools allow 10 runs a day with no sign-in, and you get two Premium tool uses before an account is required.
Does PDFalot have a desktop app?
No. It is a mobile-first web app that can be installed to your home screen as a PWA, but there is no native Windows or macOS binary. If offline desktop processing is essential, iLovePDF is the better fit.
Which is cheaper?
PDFalot Premium is $4 a month or $40 a year and unlocks every AI tool. Competitor pricing changes regularly, so compare against their current pricing page rather than a figure quoted in any comparison article, including this one.
Can PDFalot handle scanned documents?
Yes. In-browser OCR handles ordinary scans; heavy or multi-hundred-page scans are routed to server OCR on Premium for accuracy and speed.
