Most students still study the same way their parents did: highlight the textbook, re-read the highlights, and hope. Cognitive science has been very clear for two decades that this doesn't work. Active recall and spaced practice do. Here's a study loop that uses PDFalot to do both — without adding hours to your day.
Step 1 — Turn the chapter into a one-page summary

Step 2 — Ask the PDF the questions your lecturer will ask

Step 3 — Generate a practice quiz
Ask for a 10-question multiple-choice quiz with an answer key at the bottom. Do it on paper, mark it, and note anything you got wrong.
Step 4 — Space it out
- Day 1: Summary + quiz.

Why this beats highlighting
You're testing yourself instead of recognising familiar text. You're spacing the practice instead of cramming. And you're doing it in a fraction of the time — because the AI does the summary and quiz-writing you'd otherwise skip.
The learning science behind each step, named
It's worth naming the mechanisms explicitly, because knowing why a technique works makes it much easier to stick with when you're tired and tempted to fall back to re-reading. Step 3, the quiz, is the testing effect: retrieving information from memory strengthens that memory far more than re-exposure to the same information does, even when the retrieval attempt fails. This is one of the more robust findings in educational psychology, replicated across age groups and subjects.
Step 4's schedule — day 1, 3, 7, 14 — is spaced repetition, sometimes called the spacing effect. Reviewing material at expanding intervals produces better long-term retention than reviewing the same total number of times in a single cramming session, because each retrieval is harder and more effortful when some forgetting has occurred, and that difficulty is what drives the memory trace deeper. The specific intervals above are a reasonable default; if an exam is closer than fourteen days away, compress the schedule proportionally rather than skipping steps.
Asking the AI to generate exam-style questions before you've seen the real exam is a form of generative learning combined with what's sometimes called desirable difficulty: a study task that feels harder in the moment but produces better transfer to a new context, which is exactly what an exam is — a new context you haven't seen the answers rehearsed in before.
Interleaving across chapters
The single biggest upgrade to this system, once you have more than two chapters covered, is interleaving: mixing questions from different chapters in the same practice session instead of drilling one chapter at a time. Blocked practice — chapter one, then chapter two, then chapter three, each finished before the next starts — feels more comfortable and produces better scores during practice itself, which is exactly why it is deceptive. Interleaved practice produces worse-looking scores during study and better scores on the actual exam, because it forces you to first identify which chapter's concept applies before you can apply it, which is closer to what an exam question actually demands.
In this system, interleaving is one extra prompt: once you've generated single-chapter quizzes for chapters one through four, ask the AI for a fifteen-question quiz drawing two or three questions from each chapter in a random order, with no chapter labels shown until you check your answers.
Common mistakes that quietly undo the system
- Reading the AI's answer to a question immediately after asking it, instead of attempting an answer first. This converts active recall back into passive reading, and it is the single most common way students sabotage this method without realising it.
- Only ever quizzing yourself on material you already feel confident about, because it's less unpleasant than quizzing yourself on the section you skimmed. Confidence and retention are only loosely correlated; the section you avoided is usually the one worth quizzing most.
- Treating the one-page summary as the thing to memorise, rather than as a map for identifying what still needs deeper reading. A summary that feels complete on its own is usually one that's been oversimplified.
- Skipping the day-3 cold retest because the day-1 quiz already went well. The value of day 3 is precisely that some forgetting has happened by then; retesting too soon after success doesn't add much.
When this system does not work well
This loop is built around material that has a defined, extractable structure — textbook chapters, lecture notes, review articles — where a summary and a set of questions can meaningfully represent the content. It works less well for skill-based subjects where the exam tests execution rather than recall: a mathematics module assessed by problem-solving, a programming exam, a studio critique. For those, replace the multiple-choice quiz in step 3 with a request for practice problems of the same type and difficulty as the source material, and grade yourself by actually working through them, not by recognising the method when you see the solution.
It also assumes the source PDF is reasonably well-structured to begin with. Lecture slides that are mostly images of a whiteboard, or scanned handwritten notes, give the summariser much less to work with, and the resulting summary quality drops noticeably. In that case, spend five minutes typing a rough outline of the actual content before uploading, so the model has real text to summarise rather than guessing from an image.

Putting a number on the time cost
A realistic session for one chapter — summary, question generation, ten-question quiz, and marking — runs to about twenty-five minutes the first time and closer to ten minutes for the day-3 and day-7 retests, since the quiz already exists and only needs re-attempting. Across a fourteen-day cycle for one chapter, that is roughly fifty minutes of total study time, spread out instead of concentrated, which is both easier to fit around a class schedule and more effective per minute than an equivalent fifty minutes spent re-reading the chapter once.
Adapting the loop for group study without losing the individual benefit
Group study sessions built around this system work best when each member generates their own quiz independently before the group meets, then the group session is spent quizzing each other cold rather than reading summaries together out loud. Reading a summary aloud as a group is comfortable and feels productive, but it is recognition again, not recall, and it produces the same false sense of mastery that highlighting does. A group of four people quizzing each other on questions none of them wrote themselves is close to ideal, because you are being tested on material framed by someone else's understanding, which surfaces gaps a self-written quiz tends to route around.
One useful group variant: assign each member a different chapter to generate a quiz for, then swap quizzes so everyone is tested on material they did not write the questions for. This adds a layer of interleaving across people as well as across chapters, and it catches the case where a student's own quiz unconsciously avoids the parts of the chapter they understood least, which happens more often than most students realise.
